As reported by Vice, an anonymous hacker reached out to Motherboard who claimed that he was able to get access to the email behind anybody’s Xbox Gamertag by exploiting a vulnerability in the Xbox live. Email addresses that are linked to Gamertags are private by default.

The report states that a second anonymous hacker said the vulnerability existed in the Xbox Live enforcement portal. The portal has been built to help users learn about the policies that govern the Xbox Live service so that they can avoid behavior that will result in a suspension.

Motherboard already contacted Microsoft last week and the bug has been now fixed. However, the Microsoft Security Response Center that protects customers from security vulnerabilities didn’t initially consider the bug as a “serious security risk”.

'An email may be considered sensitive information, however, since it provides nothing else to identify the issuer, is not something that meets MSRC bar for service. As such, MSRC is not tracking the issue and will leave it to the product group to determine mitigation as needed”, MSRC stated in an email to Motherboard.

But, as per the hacker, the bug could have been abused easily to find out the email addresses of hundreds of Xbox players. The bug could have been then used to harass anyone with a gamertag. The report notes that this security bug was, in fact, known to another hacker too who called it the “Xbox zero-day,' bug. Although MSRC didn’t consider it too big of an issue, the bug has now been patched.
